The Batavia Project
A multi-media concert series designed to gain worldwide recognition of the violation of human rights that occurred in Dutch Concentration Camps when the Japanese occupied the Netherlands East Indies (now Indonesia) during World War II. The purpose of this project is to create awareness of and to honor the victims of this (unfortunately) little known tragedy.
Background
In 2010 The David Becker Tribune, fronted by Grammy nominated and internationally acclaimed jazz guitarist and composer David Becker, released the album “Batavia” that takes the listener on a musical (and personal) journey of Becker's family roots from Germany and Holland to Indonesia and tells their story of captivity in a Japanese concentration camp during WWII. David is passionate to share his family’s story and has reached out and received solidarity from many organizations, including The Simon Wiesenthal Center, The LibForAll Foundation and several other Concentration Camp Victim organizations in the Netherlands. Additionally, the album was featured on a segment of “All Things Considered” on Minnesota Public Radio back in November 2010. BATAVIA was ranked as one of the top 10 World Music recordings of 2010, and continues to receive praise around the globe 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary pf the release of the interned Dutch nationalism Indonesia.
